Perpetuation of the Species

Twinkie came by for coffee today. We decided that men need a rule book on relationships. Men constantly complain that women are too difficult to understand, well here's the answer. We're working on a "Man"ual. It will be a fully comprehensive guide to understanding women and what we expect in a relationship. Don't worry we'll use small words.

In writing our "Man"ual, I came to the conclusion that it is truly amazing that people have managed to reproduce as long as we have. The instinctual urge to procreate is truly the driving force that keeps us as human beings alive. Aside from procreation, men and women expect want and need totally different things from a relationship. For example:
  1. Men need to define the relationship. Women need to label the relationship.
  2. Men need to have the actions of a relationship - time together, planned social occasions, etc. Women need to have the emotions of a relationship - commitment, trust, love, connection.
  3. Men have the ability to think about nothing. Women do not.
  4. Men are looking for a replacement for their mother. Women are looking for prince charming.
  5. Romance is a fictitious concept promoted by media and the mass market to move product and promote commerce. It does not exist any more than Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny.

That said, men and women continue to look for companionship. Straight people continue to look for companionship with the opposite sex. As a general rule we are incompatible for companionship. The ages are filled with examples of failed attempts at compatibility. Sure there are the few exceptions told by history, but even most of those exceptions are fictitious. So why do we continue to look for that which does not exist? Because we believe, each of us, that we are the exception to the rule.
